What Are Solar Panels Made from?; The Production Process
Step 1: Sand Is Converted into the Crystallised Silicone
The manufacturing of solar panels is not simple and requires a lot of time, energy, money. Silicon used to make the photovoltaic cells in these modules is drawn from sand at a very high-temperature furnace that produces solid silicone rocks on cooling down collected from the bottom.
Step 2: The Formation of Ingots
The process of turning the crystallized rocks into ingots is a delicate, meticulous one. The machine operator has to make sure that atoms line up and are infused with boron for positive polarity throughout the entire melting process. This ensures a successful infusion later in production when these ingots will be used as an essential component of your favorite electronic device!
Step 3: Grind, Polish, And Wafer
When the silicon ingots are completely cooled, they can be ground and polished to produce a smooth surface. Once the ingot is even, it’s then sliced into silicon discs that only measure less than an inch thick! Manufacturers could cut these thin slices because thinner ones will reduce waste while also increasing production efficiency.
Step 4: Polarising Conductors
- A metal conductor, like boron, is added to the silicon wafers. The two types of silicone are:
- N-type silicone: this lies on the solar panel’s surface.
- P-type silicone: this lies below N-type silicon and creates a power imbalance in our device. These two layers will try to fill each other’s voids by attracting or repelling one another accordingly.
Step 5: Weaving A Solar Grid
The solar cells, or P-type and N-type silicones, are imbalanced to conduct energy. When forming the panel, layers of these materials are soldered together in a grid-like matrix that absorbs sunlight when it hits. The imbalance stimulates electrons within each type of silicone (N and P) to move back towards balance with one another – this process repeatedly occurs, which is what generates electricity!
Step 6: Glass and Coating of the Solar Panel
Weatherproof and robust solar panels are what is made of in the outer layer. The glass paneling and an anti-reflective coating that encourages sunlight absorption, rather than reflection, are added during the manufacturing process.
Step 7: Installation
Solar panels are installed in a sun-drenched location at the property by a team of experts who will then link the solar panel to your existing power systems. They tend to be one of few areas on homes that get enough sunlight for optimal energy production and because it doesn’t impact the home’s façade.
