President & Chief Executive Officer
Jeff Probst was named President and CEO of Blue Sun in January 2003. Previously, he held key management positions with leading American corporations that successfully launched innovative technologies and brands, both in the United States and internationally.
Mr. Probst's career in the consumer battery industry featured positions with Gould Electronics and subsequently with Duracell, now divisions of Gillette. Mr. Probst had high level involvement in the development and launch of virtually all of the new consumer battery technologies of the past two decades. In launching these products, Mr. Probst differentiated commodity-based sales to pioneer premium positioning, pricing, and strategic alliances, and develop substantial new business sales and margins. At Ecolab Inc., the world leader in advanced cleaning technologies for the global hospitality, institutional and industrial markets, Mr. Probst expanded Japanese and Asia Pacific markets, and drove overall revenue growth through the development of new sales and marketing strategies as well as products.
Jeff holds a Master of International Management from the American Graduate School of International Management, and a B.S. in Economics from Miami University.
Chief Financial Officer
Justin Bzdek, a musician and writer with 20 years' professional experience in finance, scientific research, and human resources, joined the founders of Blue Sun in January 2002.
As financial manager for the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University from 1998 to 2002, Justin tracked federally funded research and approved research budget proposals, originated and managed internal budgets and database accounting systems, and chaired search committees for more than 70 research faculty.
From 1995 to 1998 Justin was marketing analyst and assistant to the vice president of marketing for Concepts Direct in Longmont, Colorado, developing modeling and reporting systems for financial analysis. His poetry, essays, and articles have appeared in numerous publications, including the Mountain Gazette, Buzzworm, Pindeldeboz, GIS World, Environmental Lab, and Architectural & Engineering Systems, and have included articles on the Clean Air Act, environmental chemistry, and alternative fuel vehicles. Justin leads Blue Sun's equity and debt finance and directs business plan and and research grant writing. He develops relationships and negotiates agreements with strategic partners, directs quality assurance and intellectual property, and manages investor relations.
A Colorado native, Justin holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Colorado State University.
Vice President, Operations
Sean Lafferty co-founded Blue Sun in 2001 after 10 years' experience in the electric power and renewable energy fields and leads the development of Blue Sun's oilseed breeding and agronomy research and development program.
From 1998 to 2002 Sean was Electrical Engineer II for Exponential Engineering Co., a leading electric power consulting company in Ft. Collins, Colorado. At Exponential, Sean designed substations for power companies and contributed to load flow studies, meter applications, safety, and innovative design. Sean leads Blue Sun's technology development, directs construction projects, manages supply and distribution, negotiates contracts, and works closely with engineering companies and technology providers, as well as managing Blue Sun's oilseed crop R&D; and cooperative development.
Sean holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Colorado State University.
John R. Long
Director of Business Development
John R. Long co-founded Blue Sun Biodiesel in November 2001 and focuses on regional expansion opportunities, market development, retail openings, grant writing, and speaking at seminars and conferences.
John founded the annual Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Fair in 2000 and in 2003 co-founded its current host, the nonprofit Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Association, for which he serves as President. The Fair, held the third weekend each September in Ft. Collins, Colorado, now attracts thousands from all over the region, educating about renewable energy, alternative fuels, green building techniques, and other topics related to healthy, sustainable lifestyle choices. John also serves on the Boards of Directors of Northern Colorado Clean Cities, the Northern Colorado Renewable Energy Society, and the City of Fort Collins Air Quality Advisory Board. From 1999 to 2001, John served as Director of Development for Village Earth, a nonprofit organization focused on international sustainable development and appropriate technologies in developing countries.
John holds a Bachelors degree in Zoology from the University of Florida and a Masters degree in Botany from Colorado State University.
